I took a red-eye from Las Vegas to Milwaukee for my brother’s college graduation last weekend. My sleep cycle doesn’t appreciate overnight flights as much as my wallet does; I suffered through this one. My plane landed at 4:30am and when I got to Sam’s apartment I slept for another five hours.
My mom met us for breakfast at Sam’s favorite, Comet Café. We entered the local restaurant with classic diner decor: booths against the windows, metal bar stools surrounding the bar, and a pastry display case filled with large cupcakes. It’s one of those places where you know the food will be delicious from the moment you walk in.
At that point in the day, I didn’t know what I was hungry for. I was starving – it was 10:30 in the morning but it felt like 2:30 in the afternoon. My brother chose the breakfast burrito and my mom had a spinach and cheese omelet. I was too hungry for my usual “breakfast of sides” and couldn’t think of anything better than macaroni and cheese to welcome me back to the homeland.
I had the made-to-order mac and cheese from Comet Café once before, and was quickly reminded how foolish I was to consider anything else on the menu. The portion size of this creamy Wisconsin staple is gigantic and it pairs perfectly with a cup of tomato soup. I was in heaven. And for breakfast meals that I would never eat, Sam’s breakfast burrito and Mom’s omelet looked pretty good.
Comet Café is the definition of a Midwestern cafe and bar. It is a neighborhood place filled with nice people, good energy, and great food. This isn’t a place to miss on your next trip to Milwaukee. If you don’t believe me, watch Season 6, Episode 12 of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and see for yourself.
If that isn’t convincing; every Saturday night is Bacon Night. Who doesn’t want to free basket of bacon?
